We are not defenders of the river. We are the river.
Global warming, ecological collapse and environmental catastrophe are often attributed to humans.
Jason Hickel, the author, suggests otherwise… ish.
Emissions grew exponentially in the last 500 years — which correlates to the mass adoption of capitalism — and as such Hickel aims at it.
Yes capitalism accelerated human development (eventually), but will it continue to accelerate our development?
Capitalisms goal is growth — what you have today should be around 2% larger next year. Sounds acceptable right?
Hickel says no to both.
My reflection
Capitalism has been a great tool for humans, at the expense of many other humans, many environments and perhaps now our future too.
A managed society still feels Orwellian to me, but with a utopic view I can see it happening. What I can’t see is how we move from the current state to that solution — something Hickel attempts to suggest at the end but not in enough details for me.
