Bill was an awful football coach, yet at his funeral the biggest name in Silicon Valley were there. Larry Page, Sergey Brin, Mark Zuckerberg, Sheryl Sandberg, Tim Cook, Jeff Bezos, Mary Meeker, John Doerr, Ruth Porat, Scott Cook, Brad Smith, Ben Horowitz, Marc Andreessen…

He was an awful football coach because he wanted them to win life, not the match. He was a great coach.

In his career at Google and Apple, he would ensure:

  • psychological safety nets so people could take risks,
  • clear goals,
  • each role was meaningful to the goals,
  • all members were reliable
  • the mission would make an impact

Why trust Bill?

Bill did become a professional football coach, but eventually left as he felt we wasn’t harsh enough to run survival of the fittest…
